  Chapter 1 – December 20th

“Seriously Jake, I am not dressing up in a fucking Santa outfit,” Tom complained. “Not even if Paul McCartney himself asks me.”

“And that my friend is why you’ve drawn the short straw,” Jake scoffed. “McCartney is not the best bassist who ever lived; John Entwistle is. Although, we all know that bass players are a bunch of pussies. The lead guitarist is the one who attracts the women.”

Luke raised his eyebrows and sighed, knowing that the start of their age-old argument would ensure that the chorus they’d just written would be their final piece of work for the day.

Dirty Riches were writing a new album, due out in the summer, and December had seemed an ideal time to start writing and laying down some tracks. With three of the four of them having kids now, they usually took the whole of December off; no personal or television appearances and no performing. However, Luke’s state of the art studio and rehearsal room in the basement of his house meant that they could spend some time working while still enjoying the festive holidays with their wives and children.

“I suppose you are going to have your usual little tiff are you?” he asked as he closed his musical note book and locked it in a metal filing cabinet.

“No,” Jake huffed. “Because there is no argument; lead wins every time.”

“If we’re getting picky about it, I think you’ll find the drummer is the one who keeps the band together.”

Luke shook his head at Skins’ comment, knowing that he’d done it to wind up Dumb & Dumber and would, no doubt, succeed.

“No way!” Tom cried. “We all know the drummer is the dumb fuck that sits in the back with no musical ability other than to hit a drum in time with the beat.”

“And you call me a dumb fuck,” Skins laughed. “Do you know that…?”

“The fucking drummer keeps the beat,” they all chorused, having heard Skins’ defence of his trade on more than one occasion.

“Twats,” he muttered and grabbed a bottle of water from the mini fridge.

“What time is Martha making dinner?” Tom asked, his debate with Jake seemingly forgotten. “I’m so hungry, I could even eat some of Jake’s cooking.”

Jake thrust a hand to his chest. “That has wounded me Sugar Tits. You know I’m getting better. I can now actually make toast to be ready at the same time as the boiled egg. And, I’ll have you know my kids love my cooking.”

“That isn’t much of a recommendation,” Luke muttered. “Eliza adores you so much she’d never tell you otherwise, and Hendrix will eat anything you put in front of him.”

Tom started to laugh loudly. “True Story. That kid can eat me under the table.”

“He’s a growing boy,” Jake replied petulantly. “He’s going to be tall, like me.”

“He’s not even two though, dude,” Skins added. “And he can already eat more than Ethan, and my boy has a damn good appetite.”

They all nodded in agreement; Ethan was like his father, lean and very broad for a six-year-old with a healthy love of food.

“Poor Stace, is all I can say,” Tom groaned. “If this next kid she’s about to hatch has shoulders as big as yours and Ethan’s then I think there’ll be a lot of swearing in that delivery room.”

  Skins winced as he
thought about his poor wife who was six months pregnant. Giving birth to Ethan had been long and hard for her and this next baby boy was bigger according to her doctor.

“So,” Tom said. “What time is dinner?”

Luke slapped him around the back of the head.

“When my wife suggested you stayed here for Christmas and the run-up to it, that wasn’t so she could wait on you hand and foot. It was so we could get some work done and still spend time with our families.”

“I know,” Tom winced, rubbing the back of his head. “But she was the one who told me that she was going to cook tonight, so get your facts right before you slap me, you dick head.”

“Ah does Sugar Tits needs a hug?” Jake hooked an arm around Tom’s neck and showered kisses all over his face.

“Get off, Jake!” Tom pushed him away and swiped at the wet streaks on his cheeks. “You’ve just proven that lead guitarists are a bunch of pansies.”

“Ooh brutal,” Skins mocked. “Your rapier wit slays me.”

  “Oh fuck off.”

Tom gave Skins a lip curl and moved to pack away his beloved Warwick Streamer. He handled it with absolute care, tenderly stroking the body as though it was his favourite pet, before closing the case. As everyone did their own thing, packing away instruments, closing up notebooks and generally tidying up the studio, Tom heaved a small sigh of relief. It appeared that they’d all forgotten about him dressing up as Santa; thank God. He knew it was only a bit of fun for the kids, but it made him feel sick in the pit of his stomach to think about it, and he’d never be able to explain to his friends why

  Chapter 2 – December 20th

Once dinner was over, Tom was pleased that Santa still hadn’t been mentioned, even though Rocco had gabbled excitedly about what presents he hoped he would get. Jake had opened his mouth to say something, but when Eliza got down from the table, he’d been distracted telling her to get back into her seat. Tom was sure that had been a near miss.

They were all now sitting in Luke and Martha’s huge den, lounging on an immense comfy L-shaped sofa and debating whether to watch a film on the enormous TV that hung upon the wall. No one could decide on what to watch, so everyone was either chatting or reading.

“What time does Abbie’s flight get in?” Martha asked as she placed a tray of coffee down.

Tom’s head shot up from his iPad and he stared at her wide-eyed. He was just about to say that he had no idea, when Jake answered.

“In a couple of hours. I’m going to pick her up.”

Tom gave an inaudible exhalation of breath. He wasn’t supposed to know what time Abbie got in from visiting her parents in LA. Jake would have a shit fit if he knew what had been going on between them.

Tom got close to Abbie when she’d first come to stay with Jake four years ago. Jake had been so caught up in winning Amber back and building a family with her, and Eliza that Abbie had been left to her own devices a lot. Tom, who had also recently moved home from LA, was the only single one in the band, so it became natural for him and Abbie to spend time together. It had been purely friends for a long time, mainly because of Jake being Abbie’s brother. Tom had thought Abbie sweet and sexy but his friendship with Jake was important to him; they were band brothers. Then one night, a year ago, when Jake and Amber were away with the kids, Abbie got rip-roaring drunk and told Tom what she really thought of him. What man could resist a sexy woman straddling him and grinding against his junk while saying she needed him inside her – not Tom that was for sure

The sex that followed had been epic, in fact just thinking about it got Tom hard. It hadn’t happened that night; he wouldn’t take advantage of her while she was drunk. The next morning however, it was game on.

Tom had lain awake all night thinking about what Abbie had said, and the consequences of taking her up on her offer. The conclusion he made was she was beautiful and funny and he really, really liked her, plus three hours after ensuring she got to bed with a glass of water, he was still sporting a semi, so maybe it would be worth the risk. Never one to shy away from the truth, over breakfast Tom asked Abbie if she’d been serious. Abbie didn’t even blush a tiny bit when Tom reminded her of what she’d said. Within half an hour they’d both had the first of many orgasms that day.

During that weekend, they’d agreed that it would be just fun and no strings and most importantly Jake would never find out. And, that’s how it had been for the last year, until now. Now, Tom wanted something more from Abbie. He’d missed her like crazy while she’d been in LA, even though they’d spoken a couple of times over the last three weeks, and texted each other numerous times every day. He therefore decided that when she got home they were having ‘the talk’ about moving things on. His worry, apart from telling Jake, was that Abbie wouldn’t want the same thing.

“Uncle Tom, will you help us?” A little hand tugged on the sleeve of Tom’s Henley. “We need you.”

Tom looked down at Rocco Mahoney, Luke and Martha’s eldest child; sitting patiently at his feet, Rocco’s constant companion, Ernie, Martha’s Jack Russell Terrier. He smiled and shook his head. The little guy was a definite rock star in the making. He could already play the guitar at a very basic level, but for five years of age, he was still pretty good. He also dressed like a rock star. All the kids had definite ideas on what they should wear, but Rocco was a real fashion horse. Today he was dressed in skinny black jeans, a mini Nirvana t-shirt and wore a selection of leather bracelets at his wrists. He even had the same hairstyle as his dad; short at the sides and longer on top with a side parting. Furthermore, if truth be told, he handled the press better than any of them; loving to pose for the paps whenever it was required.

“What do you need me for buddy?” Tom asked ruffling Rocco’s hair.

Rocco held his breath and stared up at him. “The hair Uncle Tom, don’t mess up the hair.”

“Okay, sorry buddy.” Tom bit on his bottom lip, trying not to smile.

“So I was saying,” Rocco replied smoothing a hand over his hair to get it back in place. “We need your help Uncle Tom.”

Tom groaned inwardly. This kid spent far too much time with his dad and idolising him; he was turning into Luke.

“Okay and what do you need it for?” he asked.

Rocco looked round the room and lowered his voice. “We are making Mama and Papa a pwesent, but Gigi keeps messing it up.”

“You and Gigi are making them a present?”

Rocco nodded vehemently and then grinned. “It’s weally cool.”

Tom gave Rocco a soft smile. For all he acted all cool and grown up, he still had a little boys voice with an inability to pronounce his r’s.

  “Okay buddy, let’s go.”

Tom patted Rocco’s shoulder and pushed up from the sofa.

“Rocco, you’re not being a nuisance are you dude?” Luke asked.

Rocco shook his head. “No Papa. Uncle Tom was pweased to help me.”

“Oh he was, was he?” Luke’s lips twitched as he looked down on his son. “All right, as long as he’s pleased to help then that’s OK. Where’s your sister by the way?”

Gigi had only been toddling a few weeks, mainly because since she was big enough to sit up, Rocco had pushed her everywhere in a little truck that used to have building bricks in it. She became a princess relying on her doting brother for transportation around the house and had become lazy about learning to walk.

“She’s in the pway woom with Ethan.”

Luke smiled; Ethan doted on Gigi as much as Rocco did. They’d both tried the protective thing with Eliza, but that girl wasn’t having any of it. She was probably tougher than both Ethan and Rocco, usually the one leading the way into trouble – she was most definitely Jake’s daughter.

“I’ve just checked on them babe,” Martha added. “She’s fine.”

Rocco’s head shot to Tom and he stared at him wide eyed, evidently worried that his surprise had been compromised.

“Can I go now, Dad?” Tom asked
as he caught hold of Rocco’s outstretched hand.

Luke smiled and muttered ‘dick’ under his breath so that only Tom could hear as Rocco dragged him away with Ernie trotting behind them.

“That’s worrying.” Amber said as she plonked herself in Jake’s lap.

“What is?” Jake asked reaching forward to take a bite of the apple Amber had in her hand.

“Tom going off with Rocco.” She slapped at Jake as he moved towards her apple again. “Rocco I trust, but not Tom.”

They all laughed and sighed. They loved Tom dearly, but since Jake, his partner in crime, had settled down Tom had turned up the heat on the practical jokes; however, the man whoring had diminished greatly in the last year which had surprised them all. Otherwise, he was like a child craving attention.

“I heard Rocco ask him for some help,” Martha said. “Apparently, he and Gigi are making us a present, but Gigi keeps messing it up. When I went in she was ripping up paper, so that might be Rocco’s problem.”

“And he wants Tom’s help?” Skins scoffed. “I think he’d be better off sticking with Gigi.”

Stacey scowled at Skins and tutted. “Stop being mean to him. He’s lonely, that’s all.”

“How do you work that out?” Luke asked. “He spends more time at all of our houses than he does his own. Especially yours Jake, although I’m not sure why.” Luke smirked and ducked as Jake threw a cushion at him.

“Cut with the shit about him fancying my sister. It’s not funny.”

“Oh come on Jake,” Stacey cried. “It wouldn’t be that bad.”

  “It fucking would,” Jake muttered.

“You had a relationship with my cousin behind my back,” Luke added nonchalantly.

“Oh yes and look how well you took that.” Martha laughed and curled up on her toes to kiss Luke’s cheek. “You were so calm and collected, weren’t you?”
